Locks — your first line
A huge share of burglaries happen simply because a door or window wasn't locked, or wasn't locked properly. Get into the habit of double-locking the front door, checking every window (even ones left on the latch), and keeping keys out of sight and reach of the letterbox. If any lock is worn, sticky or missing, replace it before it lets you down.
Alarms — the deterrent
- Set the alarm every time you go out, and overnight too.
- If your system is faulty or disconnected, get it repaired — a dead alarm is a false comfort.
- Even the box and signage deter opportunists, so keep them visible and in good condition.
Safes — for what you can't replace
Jewellery, passports, heirlooms and cash belong in a properly fitted home safe — and the type and placement matter as much as the safe itself.
