uPVC Doors Sticking or Jamming? Here's What to Do

A uPVC door lock mechanism

A uPVC door that sticks, drags on the frame or needs a firm lift-and-shove to lock is easy to put up with — until it lets you down. It's more than an annoyance: a door that won't operate cleanly is both a safety and a security problem. The good news is that most can be fixed without replacing the whole door.

Why it matters more than you think

  • Safety. In an emergency such as a fire, seconds count. A door that jams is the last thing you want between you and the way out.
  • Security. A multipoint lock that only half-engages, or a door that won't pull tight, leaves your home vulnerable — a real worry through the darker, burglary-heavy winter months.
  • It only gets worse. Sticking today becomes seized shut (or won't lock at all) tomorrow.

Why uPVC doors start to stick

Usually it's alignment. Doors settle and drop over time, and they expand and contract with the weather, so the locking points and hinges drift out of line with the frame. That's why a door often locks fine in the cool morning and fights you by the warm afternoon.

Repair, not replace

In most cases this is a straightforward uPVC door repair — a hinge or keep adjustment, a new multipoint mechanism, or a replacement handle or barrel — not a costly new door. If the lock itself is worn or failing, we'll sort that too. Leave it too long and a jammed door can mean forced entry to get you back in, so it pays to act early.

Door catching or refusing to lock? Don't wait for it to trap you out (or in). Our locksmiths cover Southampton and the Solent — give us a call and we'll get it working smoothly again.

FAQs

Why does my uPVC door only lock properly in the morning?

Heat expands the door during the day so it drops and catches, and the locking points no longer meet the frame. It usually needs a small hinge or keep adjustment rather than a new door.

Is a sticking uPVC door worth repairing or should I replace it?

Repair, in the vast majority of cases. Alignment, hinges, keeps and the multipoint mechanism can all be adjusted or replaced for a fraction of the cost of a new door.
